Agalo Sandra

Bugoi, Uganda Haven of Hope Secondary School
Age: 18
Sandra lives with her mother in the village of Bugoi in rural northeastern Uganda. Her father passed away. She has four brothers and five sisters, but only seven children live at home—they are a household of eight. Sandra is the fourth born. Sandra’s family supports themselves by “digging”—they grow crops to eat and to sell when they can. Her mother also has a small business selling bread. However, they struggle to meet all of their needs, especially paying medical bills for the children, who are often sickly. Sandra helps her family at home by digging, fetching water, and selling bread for her mother. During holidays between school terms, she sometimes also works in other people’s gardens to earn some money for the family. Favorite subject: Chemistry Favorite activity: Digging (farming) Favorite color: Orange Favorite food: Beans and rice Child is happy when: She is with her friends Child wants to be: Doctor School information: Sandra is a student at the Haven of Hope Secondary School. She is currently in S2 (senior 2, the second year of secondary school). Her younger brother Brian is in the same class. In Uganda, nursery school lasts for three years and is followed by seven years of primary school and up to six years of secondary school. During school terms, Sandra boards at school, returning home for holidays. At school, she will continue to learn and play, be taught about God, and receive meals, medical care, and clothing. Alemo Brenda

Bugoi, Uganda Bugoi Haven of Hope Nursery and Primary School
Age: 14
Brenda lives with her mother and father, one brother, and five sisters near the village of Bugoi in rural northeastern Uganda. They are a household of nine, and she is the fourth-born child in the family. Brenda’s family supports themselves by “digging”—they grow crops to eat and to sell when they can. Her father also works as a farmhand on other people’s land, and her mother bakes bread to sell in the local market. However, they struggle to meet all of their family’s needs and pay the children’s school fees. Brenda helps her family at home by fetching water, collecting firewood, cooking, and washing plates. Favorite subject: Science Favorite activity: Playing netball Favorite color: Orange Favorite food: Potatoes and beans Child is happy when: She is watching movies Child wants to be: Doctor School information: Brenda is a student at the Bugoi Haven of Hope Nursery and Primary School. She is currently in P7 (primary grade 7). In Uganda, nursery school lasts for three years and is followed by seven years of primary school and up to six years of secondary school. During school terms, Brenda boards at school, returning home for holidays. At school, she will continue to learn and play, be taught about God, and receive meals, medical care, and clothing. Okot Moses

Bugoi, Uganda Bugoi Haven of Hope Nursery and Primary School

Moses lives with his father, six of his siblings, and two relatives in the village of Bugoi in rural northeastern Uganda. They are a household of ten. Moses has nine brothers and one sister—he is the sixth born. Their mother passed away. Moses’s family supports themselves by “digging”—they grow crops to eat and to sell when they can. His father also works as a fisherman. However, they struggle to have enough food, pay medical bills, and meet other needs. Moses has two brothers in the sponsorship program—Joshua and Isaac. He helps his family at home by digging.
